About the Author

René Belbenoit (1899-1959) was a French writer and journalist. He was born in Paris and raised in a respectable family. In 1923, he was unjustly convicted of a crime he did not commit and sentenced to eight years of hard labor in the French penal colony of Cayenne, French Guiana. After his release, he wrote Dry Guillotine, which became a bestseller and was translated into multiple languages. Belbenoit continued to write and lecture about his experiences in the penal colony until his death in 1959.
