About the Author

Cecília Meireles (1901-1964) was a Brazilian poet, educator, and journalist. She is considered one of the most important poets of the 20th century, and her work has been translated into more than 30 languages. Meireles was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and began writing poetry at an early age. She published her first book of poetry, "Never Mind," in 1923. Meireles went on to publish more than 30 books of poetry, as well as several children's books and essays. She also worked as a teacher and journalist, and she was a member of the Brazilian Academy of Letters. Meireles died in Rio de Janeiro in 1964.
