About the Author

Regina Portella Schneider is a Brazilian-American writer and historian. She is the author of several books, including The Last Gaucho: The Life and Legend of Flores da Cunha and The Brazilians: A History. Schneider is a graduate of the University of São Paulo and the University of California, Berkeley. She lives in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The young man rode his horse across the vast pampas, his heart filled with hope. He was on his way to the legendary city of Rio Grande, where he hoped to make his fortune. He had heard stories of the city's wealth and opportunity, and he was determined to find his place in the world.

As he rode, the young man thought about his life. He had been born into a poor family, and he had never known much in the way of luxury. But he was a hard worker, and he was determined to make something of himself. He had heard that there was work to be found in Rio Grande, and he was confident that he could find a way to make a living.

The young man rode for days, and finally he reached the outskirts of Rio Grande. He was amazed by the size and grandeur of the city. He had never seen anything like it before. He rode through the streets, taking in all the sights and sounds. He was filled with wonder and excitement.
