Franklin Dória Barão de Loreto was a Brazilian politician, diplomat, and historian who served his country with distinction for over four decades. After returning to Brazil, Barão de Loreto continued to serve in public office. He was elected governor of Bahia in 1896 and served in that position for four years. As governor, Barão de Loreto oversaw a period of economic growth and social progress in Bahia. He also played a key role in the abolition of slavery in Brazil.

In addition to his political and diplomatic career, Barão de Loreto was also a prolific historian. He wrote several books and articles on Brazilian history, including a biography of the emperor Pedro II.
