A Man of the People

Goulart was born in 1918 into a wealthy family in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. He studied law and became involved in politics at a young age. He was elected to the Brazilian Congress in 1950 and served as Minister of Labor from 1953 to 1954. In 1955, he was elected vice president under Juscelino Kubitschek.

A President for the Poor

As president, Goulart implemented a number of policies that benefited the poor and working class. He raised the minimum wage, expanded social security, and built new schools and hospitals. He also began a land reform program that redistributed land from large landowners to poor peasants.

A Threat to the Elite

Goulart's policies angered the wealthy elite and the military. They feared that he was a communist and that he would lead Brazil into a socialist revolution. In 1964, they staged a military coup and overthrew Goulart.

A Legacy of Controversy

Goulart's legacy is still debated today. Some view him as a hero who fought for the rights of the poor and working class. Others view him as a dangerous radical who threatened Brazil's democracy.
