A Life of Devotion and Service
Maria Zélia was born in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, on December 12, 1890. She was the daughter of a wealthy landowner and a devout Catholic. Zélia was raised in a strict religious environment and was educated at a convent school.
From an early age, Zélia felt a calling to serve God. She joined the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul in 1910 and was sent to work in a hospital in Rio de Janeiro. Zélia quickly became known for her compassion and dedication to the sick and poor.
In 1914, Zélia was sent to work in a leper colony in the Amazon rainforest. She spent the next 15 years caring for the lepers, who were often ostracized and abandoned by society. Zélia's work in the leper colony was dangerous and difficult, but she never wavered in her commitment to the lepers.
A Legacy of Love and Compassion
Zélia's work in the leper colony brought her international attention. She was awarded the Order of Christ by the Portuguese government in 1929 and the Legion of Honor by the French government in 1931. Zélia also received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1935 for her work with the lepers.
Zélia continued to work with the lepers until her death in 1973. She was 82 years old. Zélia's life was a testament to her devotion to God and her compassion for the poor and suffering. She is a role model for all who seek to make a difference in the world.
