Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni (1475-1564) was an Italian sculptor, painter, architect, poet, and engineer of the High Renaissance. He is considered one of the greatest artists of all time.

Michelangelo was born in Caprese, Italy, in 1475. He showed a talent for art at an early age, and he was apprenticed to a painter at the age of 13. He later studied sculpture in Florence, where he came under the influence of the great Renaissance artists Donatello and Leonardo da Vinci.

Michelangelo returned to Florence in 1504, where he worked on the Medici tombs and the façade of the Church of San Lorenzo. He also designed the fortifications of Florence during the siege of the city by the Medici family in 1529-1530.

In 1534, Michelangelo moved back to Rome, where he worked on the Last Judgment in the Sistine Chapel and the dome of St. Peter's Basilica. He died in Rome in 1564 at the age of 89.
