Gama's expedition set sail from Lisbon in July 1497. The fleet consisted of four ships: the São Gabriel, the São Rafael, the Berrio, and the São Miguel. Gama was the captain of the São Gabriel.
The voyage to India was long and difficult. The ships had to battle storms, disease, and hostile natives. But Gama was a determined leader, and he kept his men on course.
After more than a year at sea, Gama's fleet finally reached India in May 1498. The Portuguese were welcomed by the local ruler, who was impressed by their ships and their technology.
Gama spent several months in India, trading for spices and other goods. He also established a Portuguese trading post in Calicut.
Return to Portugal
Gama returned to Portugal in September 1499. He was greeted as a hero, and he was rewarded by the king with a large estate and a knighthood.
