About the Author
Eça de Queirós was a Portuguese writer who is considered one of the greatest writers of the 19th century. He was born in Póvoa de Varzim, Portugal, in 1845. He studied law at the University of Coimbra, but he soon abandoned his legal career to pursue a writing career.
Queirós's first novel, The Crime of Father Amaro, was published in 1875. The novel was a critical and commercial success, and it established Queirós as one of the leading writers of his generation.
Queirós went on to write a number of other novels, including The City and the Mountains (1901), The Maias (1888), and The Illustrious House of Ramires (1900). He also wrote short stories, essays, and travelogues.
Queirós died in Paris in 1900. He is considered one of the most important writers in Portuguese literature, and his work has been translated into more than 30 languages.
