About the Author

Alfredo Casella (1883-1947) was an Italian pianist, composer, and conductor. He was one of the most important figures in Italian music of the 20th century. Casella studied piano with Giuseppe Martucci and composition with Luigi Torchi. He made his debut as a pianist in 1901 and quickly gained a reputation as a virtuoso. He also composed a number of works for piano, including the Sonata No. 1 (1906), the Sonata No. 2 (1910), and the Partita (1920). Casella was also a conductor and conducted the orchestras of the Teatro alla Scala in Milan and the Augusteo Orchestra in Rome. He died in Rome in 1947.
