Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: A Life in Music

A Child Prodigy

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born in Salzburg, Austria, on January 27, 1756. He showed an early talent for music, and by the age of five he was already composing. His father, Leopold, was a musician himself and recognized his son's talent. He began teaching Wolfgang music theory and composition, and by the age of six, Wolfgang had written his first opera.

A Musical Tour of Europe

In 1762, Wolfgang and his father embarked on a tour of Europe. They visited the major musical centers of the time, including Vienna, Paris, and London. Wolfgang performed for royalty and nobility, and his talent was widely acclaimed. He also met some of the most famous musicians of the day, including Johann Christian Bach and Joseph Haydn.

The Salzburg Years

After returning from their tour, Wolfgang and his father settled in Salzburg. Wolfgang continued to compose, and he also began to study law. However, he found law to be boring, and he soon gave it up to focus on music.

In 1777, Wolfgang was appointed court musician to the Archbishop of Salzburg. He held this position for three years, but he was unhappy with the restrictions that it placed on his creativity. In 1781, he resigned from his position and moved to Vienna.

The Vienna Years

Vienna was the musical capital of Europe, and Wolfgang quickly established himself as one of the city's leading composers. He wrote operas, symphonies, concertos, and chamber music. He also performed as a pianist and conductor.

Wolfgang's music was widely admired, and he was considered to be one of the greatest composers of his time. However, he was also a complex and troubled man. He was often in debt, and he struggled with depression.

The Final Years

In 1791, Wolfgang fell ill. He died on December 5, 1791, at the age of 35. The cause of his death is unknown, but it is thought that he may have died from a streptococcal infection.
